As recruitment consultant’s, We’ve seen first hand how difficult it can be for hiring managers to recruit the right candidates for their team. And while there are many factors that can contribute to this challenge, one of the biggest reasons is that hiring managers are not always trained to recruit. Let’s be honest, they have their own job to do. The job that consumes most of their day, The job that they get it in the neck if it’s not right on a day to day basis. That’s the thought anyway but without knowing how to recruit correctly that job they have to do will fall apart.
According to a survey by HR Daily Advisor, only 14% of HR managers believe that they have the necessary recruitment skills. This is a concerning statistic, as recruitment is a crucial aspect of any organisation's success. Without the right people in place, it's difficult to achieve your goals and objectives.
The reality is that most hiring managers are experts in their field, but they may not necessarily have the knowledge or experience required to identify, attract, and hire the right candidates. And even if they do have some recruitment experience, it's not always easy to know the best processes for finding and selecting the right candidates. Many think an advert will have candidates flocking in. Candidates who are looking maybe, the best are not, most are happy where they are. Then you must question if it’s the right job board written correctly, targeted correctly. That’s for another day though.
A survey by LinkedIn found that 46% of talent professionals struggle with identifying the right candidates. This highlights the fact that even those with some recruitment experience still face challenges when it comes to finding the right talent for their organisation.
Finally, there is often a pressure and expectation placed on hiring managers to know everything about recruiting. They are expected to be experts in all aspects of the hiring process, including sourcing, interviewing, and selecting candidates. As a result, they may be hesitant to admit when they don't know something or when they need help.
So, what can be done to help hiring managers improve their recruitment skills? One solution is to provide training and support to help them better understand the recruitment process and how to identify and attract the right candidates. This could include training sessions, online resources, and support from recruitment consultants or other experts in the field. How many companies have you worked for that offer this though?
